Only those people who earn enough “Citizen Contributions” from their primary job are permitted to rest. The others work through the night, fuelled by the drug StayAlert, which allows them to accrue “Conties”.
Harvey Fletcher is not very bright but is content to work as a carpenter by day and a labourer at a carbon sequestration centre by night. He will not know sleep until retirement, deep into his seventies. However, this simple man has come to the attention of a shadowy group of people and his life will never be the same again.
